An interplay of harmonious tones

Pol Solá for Konoha

Pol Solà (Barcelona, 1985), is a director, designer, animator, and co-founder of the creative studios Device, Amigo Total and All in Pixel. With more than 10 years of experience in the sector, he has worked for brands and clients such as Google, Mtv, Nike, Spotify among many others.

As a director, designer, animator, and the co-founder of the creative studios Device, Amigo Total and All in Pixel, how would you define your style?
PSIn my creative journey, I see my style characterised by the seamless interplay of harmonious tones, minimalistic composition, and captivating textures. My art is a fusion of balanced elements and lifelike refractions, resulting in a transformative visual experience. Embracing minimalism and a deep appreciation for the nuances of colour aesthetics, my work serves as a contemplation of the profound interplay of light, space, and colour.
What inspired you to become a digital creative, and when did you first realise your passion?
PSI have been working in the creative industry for over 15 years. I started with graphic design, later transitioned to animation, and have been working as an animation director and creative director for quite some time now. Seven years ago, I began illustrating, initially as a hobby without a specific creative or professional goal in mind. However, over time, my style evolved. I have held three exhibitions, and I have collaborated with internationally renowned brands like Apple and Adobe.
Pol, where did you find your inspiration for this proposal? What references did you explore, if any?
PSI have spent many years exploring the behaviour of stones, abstractly and artistically, often representing them as silhouettes and occasionally delving into their luminous qualities. I enjoy experimenting with composition, whether this means finding balance when stones are stacked or creating the illusion the elements are floating. This illustration is a reflection of my most classical work. It's a study of how the Konoha can interact in this context while I play with pieces from the natural environment in a digital exercise with an analog aesthetic.
Could you share with us what the conceptual meaning of light is for you in your work?
PSMy work is centred around light, but in an indirect manner. I play with the reflections created by these lights in a 3D environment. My materials are constructed from reflective materials, and by manipulating the surrounding lights, I find ways to paint the objects from within exploring new ways to create. The magic of the results lies in how the lights I blend interact with each other in these reflections.
What challenges have you faced as a creative working with natural and artificial light? How did you overcome them?
PSI always strive to envision light as an artistic component, detached from realism. To me, it's the way I illustrate light. I exclusively work digitally, using a specific resolution and rendering engine to imbue the aesthetic result with an analog touch. This process, which initially began as a playful exploration, offered a multitude of possible outcomes. Since then, it has been an essential part of my learning journey through my career as a digital artist.
How did light influence your artistic vision and storytelling for this collaboration?
PSI usually deal with light in an abstract manner. In this case, it has been a significant challenge because I had never applied light within a figurative environment. However, it has been an enjoyable journey, exploring how to implement my work in this context.
Pol, what does the Konoha express to you?
PSI appreciate the upper shade piece and how the light is cast upon Konoha from its source below. Conceptually, the lamp resonates with my own working style, though it’s a tangible model. I found the functionality of Konoha to be a brilliant idea.
During this process, which features did you find important to highlight about Konoha?
PSI love the concept of the Konoha design, simple and sophisticated at once. Furthermore, the quality of light it emits, as well as its functionality, are subtle yet highly effective. I truly adore it.
