María Contreras for Santorini

María Jesús Contreras is an illustrator born and raised in the south of Chile in a rainy small town. She studied Graphic Design at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, where she currently lives. Her art is characterized by strong and saturated colors, full of childhood memories. Obsessed with creating creatures, be they human or animal, or even inanimate objects, María creates an almost fantasy-like setting filled with Santorini’s outdoor lamps.

Please tell us a little about yourself?
MCI come from a city at the beginning of Patagonia. So I grew up with few artistic references or museums and that kind of thing. Still, I was always very passionate about drawing, and often my artistic references were supermarket advertisements or calendars, etc., which influenced my style a lot in terms of the saturation of colors and simple themes.
How would you define your style?
MCSaturated, portraying the mundane daily, sometimes surreal, nostalgic, and intimate.
What concept did you want to put forward in your proposal?
MCI wanted to expose Santorini in a rather romantic context and make us spectators of a scene through the eyes of a pet.
What was your inspiration for this proposal?
MCWhen I started working with the Santorini, I immediately thought of the lanterns in the squares at dusk. I like how the colors contrast and how the light falls almost in a straight line to the ground, like an umbrella between night and day.
Is there any feature of the Santorini that stands out for you?
MCI think about the multiple eyelashes and how the light is distributed.
Working with light is essential for any artist. What role has light played in your collaboration with Marset?
MCEverything! The scene seeks to portray the deep contrast between darkness and light.
