Rosa Sawyers for Ginger
Rosa Sawyers is a freelance animator living in Brighton and currently studying animation in London. She graduated in design in 2020 and, during the pandemic, began teaching herself animation as a new creative form of expression. Seeing Rosa Sawyers’ work means opening up to a different world, where calming scenes are presented with subtle lighting. And this collaboration is no exception. She brings a magical atmosphere to the Ginger wall lamp for interiors, combining nature with a tranquil life at home.

How would you define your style?
RSI'm very driven by nostalgia and the comfort of the familiar. I love using nostalgic textures and aesthetics to create a familiar warmth in my work. I like to make simple looping scenes that take me back to being in serene natural spaces. The short loops help me put less pressure on what I make, with the never-ending nature of a loop perpetuating the atmosphere of magic, surrealism and tranquillity.
What concept did you want to present in your proposal?
RSThe Ginger lamp is so organic and otherworldly I wanted to show it in a way that brings out these contrasting feelings - familiar, yet magical.
What was your inspiration for this proposal? Did you take into account any kind of references?
RSI always go to nature for inspiration and reference. I was looking into bioluminescence in nature, how certain living organisms produce light, and how this looks on the surrounding plants and scenery - especially certain mushrooms whose shapes mirror the Ginger lamp itself.
What does the Ginger lamp evoke, and in what way are you taking it to the scenario you are proposing?
RSI love working with light, so I was very excited to explore what I could do with the light in a scene. Subtle touches of light and colour bouncing off walls and surfaces, the Ginger lamp interacting with plants, even the light reflecting the colours of a sunset.
Is there any feature of the Ginger that stands out for you?
RSI really enjoy the small circle in the middle covering the light source of the Ginger - and the depth this creates with the contrasts of light and dark. Additionally, the way the light curves away from the wall and creates shadows of its own.
Working with light is essential for any artist. What role has light played in your collaboration with Marset?
RSIt's been amazing to animate something glowing and beautiful that is actually a real object! Although I'm very used to creating my own glowing flowers in scenes, it's incredibly satisfying to light up something that actually exists and looks just as amazing in reality.
