Elena Boils
Elena Boils is a Mexican illustrator based in London, interested in the creation of imaginary spaces represented through rigid shapes and figurative lines. Her surreal imagination is also evident through the way she captures nature, creating unique atmospheres. Recently, Elena has just illustrated a fictitious place for the cluster, a fixture that allows several Dipping Light pendant lamps to be connected at the same time, in a single point of light. With it, you can illuminate large spaces and create with absolute freedom compositions of light and color.
Elena, how would you define your style?
EBMy style is a mix between rigid lines and shapes with natural and free elements. In my illustrations, I like the objects in the foreground to contrast with the rest of the space; as well as color, which is fundamental in my process, and somehow guides the piece from beginning to end.
What concept did you want to put forward in this illustration?
EBAn imaginary place where I would like to live. I'm very interested in interiors that present a fantastic and fun atmosphere, but at the same time, have objects that balance them and resemble reality.
What was your inspiration for this illustration?
EBI was inspired by the multiple color options of the Dipping Light. From this palette I contrasted the lamps with the rest of the illustration. In addition, I kept the flat shapes in mind to explore the construction of the space.
In what ways are you bringing the Dipping Light along with the cluster fixture into a setting?
EBI love the idea of having the exterior and interior intertwined. For this reason, I placed the Dipping Light above the window, which allowed me to play with perspective, as even though the lamps are inside the space they overlap with the outside.
Is there a feature of the Dipping Light or the cluster that stands out to you?
EBThe colors! Some of these colors evoke those of a sunset and I think it plays very well with the artificial light. I love the possibility that you can combine different Dipping Lights through the Cluster. I am very struck by the different shades and above all, the atmosphere that this creates.
Working with light is essential for any artist. How has light played a role in this collaboration?
EBIn my work, contrasts with colors are essential because they allow me to create an illusion of brightness and darkness that I exaggerate in the spaces of my illustrations. And this collaboration was no exception, so I looked for opposing colors to create this illusion.
