A game of light and dark

Juan Bertoni for Theia

Juan Bertoni, an artist known for his playful and colourful style, discovered his passion for art at an early age. In this collaboration with the Theia lamp, he plays with the concept of merging light and shadow in the same design.

Juan, how would you define your style?
JBI'm going to try to answer you but I prefer to be defined by others. My style is fun and ambiguous: impulsive and conscious, childish and mature, relaxed and serious.
Why did you decide to dedicate yourself to art?
JBArt has always been present in my life. Some of my most joyful and palpable memories are from when I was very young and I used to make fun and artistic scenes for my family on Sunday afternoons. Now, if we talk about moments of realisation, I think it has had to do with accepting myself as an artist, in the sense that I dedicate myself to live from art and for art.
What challenges do you face as a creative?
JBEvery project is a challenge and that's always interesting. Sometimes solutions emerge when you expect them, sometimes just when I'm tucked up in bed about to go to sleep and sometimes, from synergies with great teams, I love sharing processes.
What was your inspiration for this proposal? What references did you explore?
JBThe 30's. Miami. Lo BoBo (Bourgeois Boheme).
What does the Theia express for you and how did you translate it into the scenario you’re proposing?
JBA game around the light-dark ambivalence, where both coexist with opulence.
What characteristics would you highlight about the Theia?
JBI think the designer of the Theia -Mathias Hahn-, did a great job, a very interesting dance between light and shadow.
Working with light is essential for any artist, what role does light play in this collaboration?
JBIn this work the lighting makes the colours appear more vibrant or more soft, and shadows can alter the perception of depth and texture.
